If you’re feeling as if respite time just creates more work for you, you’re not alone as a caregiver. It’s very common for caregivers to work harder at taking a couple of hours away than they would to just stay in the situation. That’s often why they avoid taking that time. But you can still take the time you need for yourself without having to work double time.

Get Rid of Bad Feelings Over Taking Time Away

One of the first things to do is to get over any bad or negative feelings you have around taking respite. No one can keep running at full speed all day every day. It’s just not possible. Taking time just for yourself away from being a caregiver is an essential part of helping you to remain a caregiver.

Make Respite a Regular Event

Respite needs to be something you take advantage of on a regular basis. Schedule it just like you would any other appointment. Let yourself move your respite time if you need to in order to make it more convenient, but never allow yourself to cancel it. That’s going to help you to see how important respite time is for you.

Use Respite with Other Tools, Like Delegating

Respite time is a tool that you use to be a better caregiver. There are other tools, too, like delegating tasks that you need help accomplishing. Use as many other tools as you can to ensure that you’re covering all of your bases. These tools aren’t shortcuts. They’re a way for you to get as much done as you need to get done.

Technology Is Another Tool

Tech tools are just another tool for you to use. Online calendars and reminders all help you to stay on target and avoid forgetting things. Another bonus is that you can share your calendars, notes, and task lists with other people, such as other family members or home care services providers. That way you can keep everyone informed without having to remember who hasn’t heard yet.

Taking respite time feels complicated and difficult at first, but it really doesn’t have to be. You can simplify the situation as much as you need to in order to feel comfortable. Take your time getting used to the idea, but make sure that you do finally take time away.
