There’s a lot of stress involved in caregiving. The more that you do to take care of yourself, the more resistant you’ll become to the effects of stress. You may find that this all takes some time, and that’s okay. What you’re looking for is a way to get relief from the worst of the stress.

Watch What You Eat

Food is fuel and that’s especially true for you as a caregiver. If you’re eating foods that aren’t so healthy for you, you’re going to be more likely to feel run down and you’re more likely to lean on things like sugar to try to get you through the day. Changing your eating habits isn’t always easy, so start out slowly with small changes that you add to over time.

Get Plenty of Rest

Rest and sleep are key to helping you to avoid stress more readily. It’s difficult to get the sleep that you need sometimes as a caregiver, though. Start committing to get more sleep that is of higher quality. When you make that commitment, it’s going to be much easier for you to stick to a regular bedtime and a consistent wakeup time.

Move More Often

Exercise is important for your senior and it’s important for you, too. When you start moving more your body is going to become stronger and it’s going to crave healthier foods. You’ll also notice your energy levels improving, partly because you’re releasing endorphins into your system and partly because you’ll be able to sleep better. All of that will help you to stick with exercise.

Minimize Vices

It’s tough to give up some of the vices you might have been hanging onto, like smoking or drinking alcohol. These can feel comforting at times, especially when you’re stressed, but they can also bring big problems along with them. Find ways to reduce those habits, even though it’s difficult.

Give Yourself a Break

If you’re not already taking breaks from being a caregiver, you need to add that into your day and your week. Just because you’re helping your senior that doesn’t mean that every moment of your life is now spoken for by someone else. You need to have time for yourself, too.

You’re going to find that a combination of all of these tips will help you the most to banish stress. You won’t get rid of it completely, but you can definitely keep it at bay.
