What Should You Do When You Realize You Need Help?

It’s difficult to admit that you can’t do and be everything as your senior’s caregiver. There’s just so much for you to try to keep track of and doing that on your own can get overwhelming fast. Here’s what you can do.

Your Employer May Have Options

Believe it or not, more and more employers are developing options to help their employees deal with being a caregiver. If you haven’t explored those options, now might be the right time to do so. They can help you to figure out what would help you the most and how to access those resources.

Start Keeping Track of Your Feelings

It’s not easy to admit that you need more help. In fact, you might still believe you’re doing just fine. By keeping a journal you can start to realize that you’re more overwhelmed than you realized. You might even start to see exactly where you need the most help and what kind of help would do the most good.

Get Honest with Other Family Members

It’s also possible that you’ve been overlooking how much help your family members could be at this time. There’s often an urge to downplay what’s going on and what you need, because you don’t want to burden anyone else. But that might not be the best option. Let them know what they can do to help and how you would most appreciate their assistance.

Can You Match Helpers with Tasks?

If other family members and friends are open to helping, it might be time to start matching up helpers with tasks that they can do. By now, you should have a better idea which tasks make you feel the most overwhelmed and there may be solutions that family and friends can offer. Even if they can’t handle all of what you need done, they may be able to do more than you expect.

Home Care Services Offer a Solution

It’s not uncommon, though, for friends and family to only be able to help so much. That’s where home care services providers can be literal lifesavers. They can handle so many of the tasks that friends and family aren’t equipped to handle for you. They can also be fantastic companions for your senior.

There’s no shame in needing more help. Caregiving is demanding and there’s a lot for you to think about and to keep going on your own. Let yourself accept help where you can find it.
