When temperatures dip, a drafty home can become downright chilly. If your parents have a draftier home, is someone stopping by and making sure they’re warm enough? If the heating system stops working, how long would it be before anyone knew? Space heaters will help, but they only do so much.

If your parents are cold, a space heater in a closed room and a hot beverage can help them feel warmer until someone stops by to help. These tasty tea blends are great for warming up people on cold days.

Berry Lemon Tea

In a pan, mix four cups of water, a cup of frozen mixed berries, the juice of half a lemon, and four chamomile tea bags. Bring that to a simmer and remove from heat. Strain it and add some honey to cut the tartness of the lemon and berries.

Caffeine-Free Apple Pie Tea

The leaves from a rooibos bush make a satisfying red tea that is caffeine-free and tastes slightly nutty and sweet. It makes a fantastic base for an apple pie tea.

Mix two teaspoons of rooibos with two teaspoons of chopped dried apple pieces. Add a small cinnamon stick and let it steep. Before serving, add a splash of vanilla.

Chai

Place four black tea bags into a pan. Add two teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice, eight peppercorns, and a slice of ginger root. Add four cups of water. Bring that to a simmer and remove from heat. Let it sit for a few minutes, strain, and serve.

Chocolate Tea

Take a teaspoon and a half of dried peppermint or spearmint and add two teaspoons of cacao nibs. Let that steep in hot water for a few minutes. Add some fresh mint leaves into the teacup if the level of mint isn’t strong enough for your parents.

Lemon and Ginger Tea

Squeeze the juice of a lemon into a cup. Add some grated fresh ginger to taste. If your mom and dad prefer a stronger lemon taste, cut the ginger to ½ teaspoon. If they love ginger, boost it to a full teaspoon. Top with hot water. Add honey before serving.

Is someone making sure your parents stay warm enough when the temperatures plummet? Your family needs to consider the benefits of regular home care visits. Home care providers stop by to help with things that your parents find harder to do independently. That can include help with meals, laundry, or shopping. A call to our home care agency is the first step to take when you want to hire caregivers.
