If you’ve spent the majority of your life depending on yourself, caregiving can be really difficult for you. One reason for this is that you might lean toward “lone soldier syndrome,” which means you’re trying to do it all by yourself. You don’t have to and you really shouldn’t keep trying.

Needing Help Doesn’t Mean You’re Weak

So many people fear that needing help means that they’re not qualified or worse, that they’re weak. Just by being a caregiver at all you’ve already passed the strength test. You don’t have to prove yourself on any other level. Let go of your fears around asking for help. In fact, you probably have people who want to help you but aren’t sure how.

If You Don’t Have Help, Hire Home Care Providers

Some caregivers are isolated and don’t have access to friends and family who can help as much as they’d like. If that’s the case for you, consider hiring home care providers. They can take over a variety of different tasks for you and make your life immensely easier. You can depend on them to help even if family has let you down in the past.

Consider Finding Emotional Support, Too

It’s not just about hands-on support, though. You need emotional support to be an effective caregiver. Consider joining a caregiver support group, either in person or online. You’ll meet other caregivers who have gone through exactly what you’ve gone through. You may also want to consider talking with a counselor, especially if you’re feeling depressed or you’re concerned you might be burning out.

Respite Care Is Crucial, Especially for You

When you’ve been going it alone for too long, you definitely haven’t taken the respite time that you truly need. Make sure that you prioritize respite time once you have some help. You need to be able to take time away so that you can come back to caregiving refreshed and ready to face the challenges again. At first you might need more respite time than you think, so prepare yourself mentally for that possibility.

It’s just not possible to do all that needs to be done as a caregiver completely by yourself. That’s way too much pressure to put on one person’s shoulders and you don’t have to hold onto such damaging beliefs. Let yourself ask for help and reach out to the resources that are there for you.
