Home Care Services Covington TNIf a loved one has recently been diagnosed with diabetes, they may fear what the future brings. They know friends or family that have experienced difficulties with their eyes, feet, skin or heart after receiving a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. The truth is that they can control the possible complications by controlling their blood sugar and that is done through diet, exercise, and possible medication.

Why is Blood Sugar so Important

High blood sugar means there is not enough insulin in the body. The symptoms associated with it are extreme thirst, frequent urination, dry skin, blurred vision and fatigue. Steps need to be taken to reduce blood sugar as soon as high levels are detected, otherwise, the body can go into a state of ketoacidosis which is life threatening. Uncontrolled blood sugar can lead to complications that result in blindness, heart and kidney disease, and nerve pain. It’s a good idea to have your loved one check their blood sugar levels a few times a day and keep a chart on the results.

There are several factors that can raise blood sugar levels. These include an increase in food, not enough exercise, side-effects from medication, illness, stress, pain and dehydration. With any of these a contributing factor, it is sometimes difficult to narrow down the perpetrator. Taking a look at each one individually can help narrow down the problem.

Diet. The correct diet for diabetes is one that promotes an even blood sugar level. Foods that are rich in sugars include breads, pasta, some fruits and starchy vegetables—these cause an increase in blood sugar. Foods that should be included in a diabetic diet include high-quality proteins, some fruits and non-starchy vegetables.

Diabetic Meal Plan. A diabetic meal plan consists of meal planning tools, carbohydrate counting, or choosing foods based on their glycemic index value. You may need to experiment with a few different plans in order to find the one that works the best for your family member.

Consistency. Distribute calories throughout the day and make sure your loved one always has a glass of water by their side.

Exercise. If just starting an exercise plan, start with 10 minutes a day and work up to 30 minutes a day at least 5 days per week. Exercise can cause a drop in blood sugar so be sure your loved one has fruit juice on hand for a quick increase. They will want to monitor their blood sugar level closely before and after exercise. Signs of low blood sugar include shaking, dizziness, headache, weakness, sweating and rapid heartbeat.

Medication. It’s important that their medication for diabetes is taken as prescribed. It may need to be altered as their lifestyle changes, so be sure to keep their primary care physician informed of any spikes or drops in their blood sugar level. Their pharmacist can also take a look at their medications to determine if there is any issue with interactions.

It may take close scrutiny and a change in lifestyle, but with careful planning, your loved one can live a productive and long life despite the diagnosis of diabetes. If they need assistance with preparing diabetic-friendly meals or company on their daily walks, consider obtaining the services of a home care provider who can assist with the daily activities of living while providing that all-important companionship.
