Senior Care Cordova TN – Stubborn Is as Stubborn Does: Remembering That Mom Has a Right to Enjoy Life

Forrest Gump was an iconic movie from the 1990’s starring Tom Hanks. In that movie, there were numerous iconic lines that the characters said, including, “Life is like a box of chocolates.” There are others, and perhaps your mother, who seems to be completely stubborn right now about improving safety around the house, brings one to mind.

Right now, you may be thinking, “Stubborn is as stubborn does.”

This is certainly a play on one of those iconic lines, but we don’t want to get into what the real line said. The issue here is that your mother doesn’t seem inclined to listen to anything you have to say and you’re concerned about her safety.

She wants to go out with her friends to the park. She wants to go for walks. She wants to garden. She wants to do all of these physical activities, but you know she shouldn’t even be considering them. She has limited strength, balance related issues, and calls on you for a lot of help throughout the week.

You’re ready to put your foot down and tell her no more.

You want to take charge. You want to make sure she’s safe when you’re not there. What you may not be realizing, though, is that she has the right to enjoy her life. She may need support and assistance in order to be safer, and while you may not have the time to devote to assisting her like that, she is not out of options.

No, she doesn’t have to lean on friends.

Hiring senior home care support services is the best option your mother can consider right now. You may assume this is your responsibility, but if you’re working or have other responsibilities that limit the time you can devote to her, a senior home care aide can be just the answer you need.

An experienced caregiver will most likely encourage your mother to stay as active as she wants to be, within reason. As long as she’s safe, there should be no issue in your mother’s activity.

Your effort to keep her safe may have caused tension to develop in your relationship with her. If you sit down and talk to her about your concerns but also recommended hiring a senior home care aide so she can continue doing these things she wants to do, it can help both of you. It can help her maintain a high quality of life and provide you comfort and peace of mind when you can’t be there to support her.
