Home Care Cordova TN

Oddly enough, most family caregivers aren’t all that good at relaxing. They’re too used to being “on call” and helping with the home care of their elderly loved one who might need them. But you can’t be on deck all the time and your brain and body need down time. Now is the time to learn how to relax.

Learn to Meditate

It sounds New Agey, but meditation can do a lot to teach you how to relax. It’s also not as complicated as it seems at first. To start meditating, simply sit comfortably in a quiet space. Focus on your breathing and don’t try to solve any problems or think about anything deep. Most people find that it helps to close their eyes, but you don’t have to. If you really need help, there are a wide range of smartphone apps that will walk you through guided meditations. This is especially helpful if you find your mind wandering a lot while you’re trying to meditate.

Turn on Some Music

Music can do a lot to help you relax, especially if you choose the right music. If you’re having a difficult time relaxing, try using something like nature sounds or other sounds that may not necessarily inspire you to jump up and dance. Ask friends what they listen to when they’re ready to unwind and try some different music until you find the right combination for you.

Read a Book Just for Fun

When you’re busy all the time, reading for fun can truly be an indulgence. Try picking out a book that is a fast read for you or that you don’t have to use much brain power to get through. If that’s not your normal choice for reading material, give yourself permission to read something that is more brain candy. It’s not bad for you and can actually help your brain to use different parts of itself.

Exercise

Exercise can definitely be a way to relax. For some, that might mean a long, hard run but for others, yoga or Pilates can be relaxing. Figure out what your body and your brain need from exercise for you to relax and then provide that experience regularly.

Make a List of Your Favorites

Start making a list of all the activities that really help you to relax. Then, the next time that you need to relax but you can’t figure out what to do, pull out the list. You’ll have a ready-made group of ideas to pull from that you know will work for you.

If you can’t relax when you think your loved one might need you for some reason, you’re not alone. Make sure that you find help from another family member or from home care providers so that you can put that worry aside while you relax.
